A few days ago, we covered a Seagate 20 TB CMR BarraCuda deal. The hard disk drive (HDD) is still available for $230 so you're paying ~$11.5/TB making it a great offer worth considering. However, there is a countdown timer now for 24 hours indicating that it is a limited-time deal, so you want to get it fast.
The BarraCuda is an internal drive but you may not have space for that. In that case, you can consider Western Digital (WD)'s Elements 14 TB and Seagate's Expansion 16 TB external HDDs (purchase links towards the end of the article).
While neither WD nor Seagate state it explicitly, high capacity drives like these are based on Conventional Magnetic Recording (CMR) technology making them more robust for heavy usage than typical low capacity HDDs built on SMR (Shingled Magnetic Recording). So even though they may not be as hardy as dedicated NAS drives, they are still great for long hours of usage. And you can always use them as backups regardless.
As long as your system supports SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1/USB 3.0 (5Gbps), these HDDs should work nicely. The rated 5400 RPM spindle speed of the WD Elements and My Book will not be held back.
These are compatible with Windows 10 and 11, as well as macOS X 10.12 and newer. The box contains an 18-watt AC power adapter alongside the USB-A 3.0 cable.
